The approval marks an important milestone for the precinct’s future, supporting Wallis Entertainment’s long-term vision to invest in the Adelaide Hills while creating new reasons for locals and visitors to spend time in Mt Barker.

“Securing planning approval is a significant step forward,” said Deanna Wallis. “This has been a complex and, at times, emotionally gruelling process — and reaching this point is something we’re genuinely proud of.”

Wallis Entertainment also acknowledged the specialist teams who supported the application.

“We’re incredibly grateful to our planners, architects and traffic engineers who have worked tirelessly with us throughout this process,” Wallis said.

"This project is something that is truly needed for our hills community but also, the state more broadly".

PROJECT UPDATE

As part of the project’s evolution, the previously proposed function centre is no longer included in the current plans. Wallis Entertainment is also pleased to share that Oak & Iron Tavern will receive a refresh as part of the broader precinct improvements — enhancing the guest experience while staying true to the venue’s warm, welcoming character.

While the hotel’s operator, brand and name cannot be announced at this time, Wallis Entertainment can confirm agreements are progressing and further details will be shared when appropriate.

“We know there’s strong interest in who will operate the hotel and what the brand will be,” Wallis said. “What we can say for now is that the hotel brand is iconic — and we’re working toward an outcome that aligns with the quality, hospitality and long-term vision we want for this precinct. We look forward to sharing more in due course.”

NEXT STEPS

With planning approval now in place, the project will continue through the next stages of approvals and detailed design work. Further updates will be provided as milestones are reached.

Director Deanna Wallis says "We are thrilled to bring this project to life and offer something entirely new to the entertainment landscape. After over 20 years entertaining the Adelaide Hills, we are excited to be able to offer more for the youth and families in the area and also help bring increased visitation and tourists into Mt Barker”

Wallis Cinema is actively consulting with key stakeholders, including the Mount Barker
District Council, relevant State and Federal Government personnel, Walter Brooke Architects,
Forthwell Pty Ltd and Savills, to ensure the project supports the broader economic and community development goals of the region.

Wallis is committed to keeping our community informed. If you have questions about this proposal or would like more information, please contact URPS on 8333 7999 or email engage@urps.com. You can download our Auchendarroch Hotel and Entertainment Precinct Fact Sheet.
